History of the container:

The official description for a container is a standardized metal box for transporting movables on road, water and rail. The first container was developed by Malcolm Maclean, an American entrepreneur who brought the first container company to the New York stock market in 1958. In the nineteen thirties he developed the first container as a means to transport movables internationally. The first container ship ( The Clifford J.Rogers) sailed with 600 containers from Vancouver to Skagway. The containers were then loaded onto a train car to reach the inlands of Alaska. Subsequently the first container crane was developed in 1959 and the official standardization of containers was introduced. The measurements of a container are measured in TEU (= 20ft Equivalent Unit = approx. 6 meters.) It wasn't until 1963 that the first container was discharged in the Rotterdam harbour.
